Creating Confidence
Grades K+
Here is a great way to introduce what it means to be different and how OK it is. The kids really liked the celebs too.
Show the picture, then ask "who is this?" and "why is he special?"
Answer: JFK, he was President
What made him different/unique? He had mild dyslexia. Despite this hurdle,
he still became one of the most powerful and influential people in the
world.
(fold next one in half at first so just Pikachu is showing, then ask, "who is this?")
Answer: Satoshi Tajiri, creator of Pokemon
He had Asperger Syndrome, REALLY into bugs and video games. Despite/because of his hurdle/passion he created Pokemon.
Answer: James Earl Jones
He had a stutter when he was younger and was picked on a lot. He had to practice speaking in public and eventually developed the deep, powerful voice that he is so well-known for.
Elmer!!!
Grades K+
I did this one for MLK's Bday. We talked about what he did, how he made a difference by uniting so many people, despite their differences. He did this by using all of the "Tools" we talk about; Listening, Empathy, Using Your Words, Breathing Tool, Courage...
Then I read the book, Elmer, is one that should be at all of our schools (thank you Chela!!). It's a story of an elephant that comes to terms with being different in color and nature.
After reading this book, discuss what about them makes them so different/unique. Maybe have them close their eyes. Ask, "Do you have asthma, are you an avid reader, do you love to draw, do you love to know how things work, do you sew, do you have glasses, speak two languages...?"
We then made an all-school friendship chain. They wrote/drew everything that makes them unique. Each link represented each kid at school and when connected them and talked about regardless of differences, we can still find ways to get along with each other and be ourselves as long as we use our "Tools."
I put them in the hallway for the kids to see with a cut out of Elmer leading the way.
